maxx and Mel celebrate their 20th episode of #wagbt by discussing the state of Oregon literally being on fire and having to prepare for possible evacuation, maxx’s new career in juggling, teaching during the Pandemic in the age of Zoom/Tik Tok, raising more money for our 3rd round of Relief Stipends, ANTIDOTE (the windows exhibition we’re hosting with artists Intisar Abioto and jayy dodd), our upcoming Black Abbey zine publication (a collaboration with Sharita Towne and a Black Art Ecology of Portland), Mel’s graphic novel WaterShed Vol II dropping in December, maxx’s film screening for PICA’s TBA:20 Festival, their upcoming performance work for ANDROIDS IN THE TOWER, the problem with having jobs that folks don’t understand/recognize, what we’d grab of our possessions in an emergency, our humble beginnings in the bathrooms, the unnamed 3rd Nat Turner Project member that almost was, our wild adventures with NTP over the past 4 years, art we’re getting into these days, Antebellum and Slave Narrative Fatigue (SNF), Celie’s Glass of Water, and Just the FAXX w maxx.

We discuss what they do and how they operate within community and educate the youth, as well as their work with the city archives. We also discuss legal advocacy, sharing of resources within their networks, and shifting structures over the past few years. We then get into how the global respiratory pandemic has forced people to grapple with this current fight for Black lives, Riot Ribs/Revolution Ribs, Wall of Moms, Portland in the national news cycle, the Riot Control Agent Report, how long this Civil Rights fight could potentially last, evolving strategies, Negro Canyon, their exhibit at Holding Contemporary, arts programming, the importance of voting (plus other stuff), and how to support Don’t Shoot Portland.
