Episode 17: Black Abbey Series w/ Nichole Robinson
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
In this episode, we present the third of 4 episodes in our Black Abbey series. We chat with comics artist Nichole Robinson about hermit life as an ambivert and an essential worker during quarantine, why Black folks are so hated, how her art has been impacted by Covid and the ongoing lack of Civil Rights, and the necessity of not attaching value to output during this time. We also discuss her long-term comics project “Who’s Yer Type?”, Courier font as a Black woman, fonts as characters, her arts origin story, organizing and running comics spaces in multiple cities, how to support and access small indie comics art, digital v. hard copy comics, role play, fanfiction and overcoming IP guilt. We then chat what she’s been working on during the Black Abbey arts residency, the importance of good villains in narrative, the pain of rewrites, trying to find the logic and relatability of white supremacy (spoiler: there is none), sensitivity readers, what she would like to see more of in comics, light privilege, and what she’s reading right now.

who all in it? Episode 3: Claudine
Saturday Jul 18, 2020
Saturday Jul 18, 2020
ariella and Mel discuss the 1974 classic, Claudine, starring Diahann Carroll, James Earl Jones, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Tamu Blackwell. They explore the prominent themes of the Welfare/State surveillance of Black women and families, Black masculinity, and the politicized stereotypes of Black people on film. They also try to figure out how high the writers were for the last third of the movie and grapple with how uncomfortable JEJ’s fineness makes them.

who all in it? Episode 2: See You Yesterday
Monday Jun 22, 2020
Monday Jun 22, 2020
In this episode of the “who all in it?”, ariella and Mel discuss the 2019 Netflix science-fiction film, “See You Yesterday”, which is about two teenagers in East Flatbush, Brooklyn who attempt to use time travel to save friends and family from being murdered via state-sanctioned violence. We discuss who should get the privilege of reading Octavia Butler, the recklessness of youth, the Strong Black Woman trope, the troublesome hierarchy of Black death, the legacy and burden of the families left in the wake, and of course, that controversial ending.
Content Warning: we discuss Black death, violence, police violence against Black people, misogyny, mysogynoir...both in this movie and in real time. If you have to sit this one out, we understand.
